Liverpool vs FC Porto: UCL Match Preview

Jurgen Klopp to make only ‘two or three’ changes for the UCL clash.

Jurgen Klopp insists he will only make “two or three changes” to Liverpool’s side for their Champions League last-16 second leg against Porto on Tuesday despite the 5-0 advantage.

Klopp says he will make up to three changes to the XI which beat Newcastle 2-0 on Saturday, with Manchester United up next at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.

For Liverpool, Gini Wijnaldum and Ben Woodburn could make an appearance after missing Saturday’s 2-0 win over Newcastle due to illness. Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana could also be in contention.

Tiquinho Soares, Moussa Marega and Alex Telles could all miss out for Porto after missing their win over Sporting Lisbon on Friday.

Opta stats

  • No team has ever progressed to the next round following a 0-5 home defeat in the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie.
  • Liverpool are unbeaten against Porto, having played them five times in all competitions (W3 D2).
  • Liverpool have never lost by more than two clear goals at Anfield in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

PSG v Real Madrid: UCL Match Preview

PSG will look to overturn a 3-1 deficit in their Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid.

Angel Di Maria is set to replace injured Neymar.

The world’s most expensive player had an operation on Saturday in Belo Horizonte on a small fracture to a metatarsal in his right foot and is now recovering with the aim of being back towards the end of the season.

Di Maria is likely to start for PSG against his former club, alongside Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani in a front three at the Parc des Princes.

Draxler not happy at Emery’s decision to delay substitution

Unai Emery’s decision to delay Julian Draxler’s introduction against Real Madrid left the Paris Saint-Germain star “angry”.

Julian Draxler has criticised Unai Emery for delaying his introduction to the Champions League round-of-16 second leg with Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Trailing the two-time defending champions 3-1 after the first leg, PSG knew they needed a big performance if they were to progress to the quarter-finals.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal early in the second half made that task even tougher at the Parc des Princes, but Emery nevertheless waited to bring on the Germany international.

Draxler was stripped and ready to enter the fray when Edinson Cavani levelled things up on the night, a goal that saw Emery delay his substitution for five minutes.

Eventually, Draxler replaced Angel Di Maria, but he was unable to turn the team’s fortunes around, PSG going on to lose 2-1 and exiting the competition 5-2 on aggregate.

“In that moment I was surprised and also a little angry,” Draxler told ZDF when asked about the change.

“Yes, the 1-1 was there. But that result would not have helped us in the end at all. That’s why I thought we should keep pushing and play more offensively.

“I suffered a lot on the bench. Overall that was way too little by us. It is hard to accept we were eliminated so easily.

“Everybody inside the stadium sensed that we would not turn this around because we were lacking intensity. In the end, Real Madrid played it comfortably. There were not nervous even a little.”

Man City v Basel: UCL Match Preview

Manchester City won the first leg 4-0 at St. Jakob-Park thanks to goals from Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero.

Fernandinho and Raheem Sterling set to miss out.

Manchester City are still likely to be without midfielder Fernandinho and forward Raheem Sterling for Wednesday’s Champions League clash at home to Basel. The duo are back in training after hamstring injuries but the second leg of the last-16 tie could come too soon. However, they could both be back in contention for Monday’s Premier League trip to Stoke.

Fabian Delph could return at left-back having served a three-game domestic suspension. Benjamin Mendy (knee), sidelined since September, is back in training and could return this month.

Meanwhile, Basel will give late fitness tests to Eder Balanta and Germano Vailati. Taulant Xhaka is suspended, while Raoul Petretta, Luca Zuffi and Renato Steffen could earn recalls to the starting line-up.

Opta stats

No team has ever progressed to the next round following a 0-4 home defeat in the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie.

Manchester City are unbeaten in their last 12 Champions League games at the Etihad stadium (W9 D3), winning each of their last four, their longest run on home soil in the competition.

Come on, Man City for the win obviously.

Tottenham v Juventus: UCL Match Preview

Spurs look to reach Champions League quarter-finals.

The tie is evenly poised after Spurs came from two goals down to draw 2-2 in the first leg in Turin.

Mauricio Pochettino wants Tottenham to show a positive mentality when they face Juventus in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash at Wembley on Wednesday. Spurs have only previously reached the quarter-finals of the competition once, back in 2010/11, while Juventus have made the final in two of the last three seasons.

Toby Alderweireld will miss out for Tottenham due to a hamstring injury while full-back Serge Aurier is suspended.

Juve have recorded three successive 1-0 wins after the 2-2 draw in the first leg while Spurs have won three of their four games.

Mario Mandzukic, Juan Cuadrado and Federico Bernardeschi all miss out for Juventus. However, Gonzalo Higuain and Mattia De Sciglio are in the squad. Paulo Dybala is also expected to start after missing the first leg due to injury.

Opta stats

  • Tottenham are one of three teams still unbeaten in this season’s Champions League, alongside Barcelona and Liverpool.
  • Tottenham have won their last four games at Wembley in the Champions League, their longest ‘home’ run in the competition. They have also scored exactly three goals in each of those games.
  • Juventus have lost only one of their last seven away games in the Champions League knockout stages (W3 D3), keeping a clean sheet in each of their last three outings.

FC Barcelona vs Chelsea FC: UCL Match Preview

The Premier League champions drew 1-1 with Barca in the first leg.

Messi’s late strike – his first-ever against Chelsea at the ninth attempt – cancelled out Willian’s effort at Stamford Bridge.

Barcelona hold “a great advantage” heading into the second leg of their last-16 Champions League tie with Chelsea at the Nou Camp on Wednesday night, according to Antonio Conte. The Italian thinks his side still have a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier club competition, the draw for which takes place on Friday.

Chelsea will be without midfielder Ross Barkley and centre-back David Luiz with injury.

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta could return from a hamstring problem which will be assessed before kick-off. Nelson Semedo and Denis Suarez miss out with injury.

Opta stats

  • This will be the 14th meeting between these sides in the Champions League.
  • Chelsea are unbeaten in their last eight Champions League games against Barcelona.

Liverpool v Manchester City: UCL Match Preview

Liverpool are the only side to have beaten City in the Premier League this season.

Jurgen Klopp says it is not about being “the best team” when it comes to Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final with Manchester City on Wednesday, but that preparation will be key.

Klopp said:

“We wanted to go as far as possible in this competition, and so it was clear at one point you have to face the best teams in the world.

“That’s how it is, there’s no easy game, no easy opponent or this stage, they’re all difficult to play and now we have Man City, who are a special team.”

Liverpool only have Dejan Lovren and Virgil can Dijk as the centre-back options in the senior team. Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez are all sidelined. Emre Can and Adam Lallana are the injured midfielders.

City will continue to be without striker Sergio Aguero due to injury. Fabian Delph is available after recovering from an injury that has ruled him out since February and centre-back John Stones will be available again after a head injury.
